Elevate Your Art in 2020 | Let's Figure Out Your Superpower!
Happy New ArtBiztic Year!
It’s a brand-new decade and it is time for all of us to step it up. Let’s start with finding out what is your superpower. This is one of the topics we cover in my book, ArtBiztic. I’d like to give you a free sample of chapter 1 today. You can already do this exercise and figure out exactly what kind of art business you should be starting.
Using Your Superpower To Find Real Success
“What we really want to do is what we are really meant to do. When we do what we are meant to do, money comes to us, doors open for us, we feel useful, and the work we do feels like play to us.” ―Julia Cameron
Now that we know how to survive for the time being, we need to figure out what our business plan will be about. Think about what product or service you can provide that will be the subject of your business plan. You might be 100% clear on what this is already. But if you’re a bit unsure, read on to get a clearer picture of what you want to do.
What do you care about? Chances are you care about something . . . your music? Your paintings? Saving the world?
What is your superpower? We all have one. It doesn’t have to be flying or becoming invisible. It could be being good at relating to people, designing spaces, writing, cooking, or being organized. Whatever it is, there is a place for a superhero like you somewhere in the world. And figuring out your superpower can be the key to finding real success.
Here are three criteria to figuring out your superpower:
- What is something you’ve been good at from as far back as you can remember?
Think back to when you were a young child. What interested you naturally; what did you become good at? When we are children, we are not yet aware of the world’s limitations. Nor do we have bills to pay or other responsibilities. What is that something you would love to do if you had all the time and money in the world?
- What is something you love doing so much, it takes up your entire being? What makes you forget to eat or have restless nights? I remember when I first finished 25,000 words of a novel. I worked on it day in and day out. Fortunately, I had just broken up with my ex-boyfriend then, so I had a lot of free time and desperately needed a distraction that would completely consume me. Many things have done so in the past: making music, drawing, dancing . . . but there is something about writing that’s completely freeing. All I need is my brain and my laptop. The others took a bit more to make them happen, but writing is something I love, and it definitely takes up my entire being. So here I am today, sharing this insight with you.
- What is something you can do in service to others?
All superheroes in every comic, TV show, or blockbuster movie have one thing in common: they are always doing something for the common good. They are public servants for the world’s safety. And if they existed in real life, we not only would be in great debt to them, but somehow, they would also probably get paid well for doing what they do. It is the same concept with your superpower.
We live in an interconnected world, and the people who are in the biggest service to others doing what they love are not only the happiest people around, but they are also usually the best paid.
BOSS TIP: You can also look at your art not as your exact product or service but as your business card or way to advertise yourself. Through your music, your stories, or your illustrations, people get to know your work like how businesspeople use business cards to state who they are and what they do. For example, if you’re a good songwriter, you can offer songwriting services to other singers or musicians by showing them the songs you’ve written for yourself.
Now what is the next step when superheroes find out they have a superpower? They have to cultivate it. They have to practice. They have to get started, no matter how small or big. And lastly, they have to get out there and find the people to use their superpower for.
So, fellow superhero, one by one, we will make the world a better place in our own small or big way. But we have to figure out how to get people to pay us for our superpower.
What the Marvel or DC stories don’t show too much is how our superheroes stay afloat. Bruce Wayne’s family empire handed his wealth to him, and the Avengers seem to get government funding with the help of Stark Industries. But how do we artists achieve this in real life?
Our second step in being ArtBiztic is to create your business plan and start striving. You find out how to do so in chapter 2 of the book.
